Charge from the Provost

Technology has become a part of the delivery of all instruction to some extent, particularly since the recent pandemic. Online teaching and learning, speciality software for instruction, and the physical spaces themselves are all integral parts of the contemporary higher education classroom. In order to best serve our students, faculty, and staff, we need to consider the future of learning spaces and technologies at Sonoma State University.

Objectives

  • Utilize planning materials from the Academic Technology & Instructional Spaces subcommittee to develop a multi-year plan to prioritize needs within the academic technology portfolio of services to ensure that needs of campus are being sufficiently met.

  • Provide recommendations on improvements for faculty support and oversight of academic technology and instructional spaces with respect to innovation and creating space for new innovation in instruction.

  • Develop a multi-year plan for the retrofit and upgrade of classroom technology systems consistent with the campus budget environment.

  • Conduct a review of academic technology software and equipment portfolio for usage and cost to understand whether the benefits exist to continue funding these sustainably.

  • Provide recommendations on future areas for investment in innovative technology, software, hardware and services not currently available in the campus academic technology portfolio.

  • Develop a prioritization plan for classroom support and upgrade standards based on which group oversees the classroom space (e.g., general assignment spaces, departmentally managed instructional spaces, and departmentally managed general spaces).

  • Provide recommendations on how to deepen instructional practice through the use of instructional technology.

  • Examine resources needed to successfully implement HyFlex learning (e.g. student tech support, ISA, additional units for faculty, etc.).  Examine these costs versus the potential benefits of HyFlex for supporting enrollment growth for SSU.

  • Examine the relative benefits of instructional modality, particularly differences in HyFlex, Synchronous, and Asynchronous in terms of student interest and enrollment.

  • Ensure that all learning spaces (hybrid, online, and physical classroom environments) are supportive of and welcoming to all of our students, especially marginalized ones.

  • Explore and provide recommendations on development needs for faculty in terms of developing quality online learning (e.g., how to effectively implement QLT objectives).

  • How should our learning spaces be designed to achieve our vision for the university?

  • What are the necessary tools and technologies needed to support student learning?

  • Will HyFlex learning be something that we want to be a consideration moving forward with classroom planning? If so, what types of learning spaces and technologies are needed to do so successfully? 

  • What long-term investments do we need to make to have multi-purpose teaching and learning spaces?

  • How can we use the report from the Strategic Scheduling working group to help inform learning spaces and technology planning? 

  • How can the working group catalog and categorize additional space related issues and concerns through a transparent process to address specific instructional space issues for specific curricular purposes beyond those enumerated in this charge?
