Japanese Language Speech Contest

Sonoma State University is honored to partner with the Komaru-Koutsu Foundation and Fukuyama City University to host a Japanese Language Speech Contest. This contest provides a unique platform for participants to showcase their language skills, while fostering a deeper connection between Japanese and local Sonoma County communities. SSU looks forward to welcoming participants, supporters, and attendees for this celebration of language and learning. Speeches must be on the topic of transportation as a tool for global engagement.

Event Highlights

1. Speech Presentations: Participants will deliver speeches (3-8 minute duration) in Japanese, showcasing their linguistic ability and cultural knowledge.

2. Language Exchange: Engage in language exchange opportunities with fellow attendees, participants, and language enthusiasts. Practice your Japanese conversational skills in a supportive and friendly environment.

3. Guest Speakers: Gain insights from esteemed guest speakers who will share their experiences and expertise related to Japanese language acquisition, cultural immersion, transportation, and the significance of cross-cultural communication.

4. Awards Ceremony: Celebrate the accomplishments of our participants as we recognize their outstanding performances. Witness the announcement of winners and commendations for their exceptional contributions.

Admission: Free and open to the public
Registration: Participants must register by October 16, 2023.

How to participate

Eligible Participants: Any person 15 and older who has not stayed in Japan for more than one year; participants will be selected in advance by a subcommittee of the Speech Contest Committee. Participants are expected to prepare a compelling speech on the topic of transportation as a tool for global engagement. Registration is now open, and the registration deadline is October 16, 2023.

  1. Participants must submit a written copy of their speech (Word limit: 800-1200) characters
  2. Speeches are limited to 3-8 minutes
  3. Each participant will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation
  4. Winners will receive prizes provided by the Komaru-Koutsu Foundation

Attendees: Join us on October 23, 2023 to support the participants, engage in cultural activities, and immerse yourself in the world of Japanese language and culture. 

  1. Registration is not required for attendees. 
  2. Parking permits are required 24/7 for anyone parking on campus. You can purchase a daily permit on the Parking Management Bureau website, at our Parking Information booth, or at one of our parking pay stations. General permits are valid in all General parking lots, Housing lots from 7am-6pm. Reserved permits are valid in all lots.
