Meteorologically speaking, we're halfway through summer!
Whether you're a home gardener or simply enjoy our campus gardens, you'll appreciate that the City of Rohnert Park recognized Sonoma State's commitment to pollinators with a proclamation honoring Pollinator Week. (Read more here.)
And there’s a whole lot more happening this July in Academic Affairs.
We can expect an update on Athletics by the end of the month.
I know we are all eagerly awaiting an announcement about the future of Athletics. The President is finalizing details ahead of the NCAA deadline at the end of this month. That is when the University needs to inform the NCAA of its membership plans.
Whether we ultimately grow our club sports or opt into one of the NCAA divisions, there will be implications for Academic Affairs. In anticipation of the announcement, I've scheduled a (optional) pop-up discussion on Athletics for Thursday, August 13, at 10:30 a.m. Let's talk about what it means for us. [Add to Calendar].
The Division of Academic Affairs is expanding its role in growing and diversifying enrollment. Our Adult Learner Initiative is now recruiting its first cohort for Spring 2027.
Please join me in welcoming Melissa Hersh to Academic Affairs as our Re-Entry Concierge for the Adult Learner Initiative. Melissa has worked across higher education and the nonprofit sector, building community partnerships, advancing workforce development initiatives, and supporting adult learners as they pursue educational and career goals.
As we prepare to welcome our first cohort in Spring 2027, Melissa will serve as the primary point of contact for prospective and current adult learners, guiding them from their first inquiry through graduation.

Additionally, we're expanding opportunities to grow enrollment by opening our Study Away at Sonoma program to students from across the CSU.
The program invites students from other CSU campuses to spend a semester with us. You may be thinking, "Isn't this just the CSU Visitor Program?" Yes, and intentionally so. We've rebranded the program to better showcase what makes Sonoma State distinctive, especially as we welcome students to a campus with available housing and a personalized college experience. We've also streamlined the process by reducing bureaucratic barriers, standardizing costs across CSU campuses, and creating a more equitable financial experience for students.

In the meantime, 27% of SSU students enrolled in at least one summer course this year.
We are now in our second of three 4-week sessions. What’s more: no courses were cancelled due to low-enrollment! That means we didn’t unexpectedly disrupt students’ summer plans. Thanks go to the academic departments and schools for their excellent summer schedule planning.
Drop In: Fireside Chat with the Provost - July 22 @ 11:00 a.m.
Drop in and chat with colleagues and me in a relaxed setting with no agenda. The goal is simply to listen, connect, and better understand the experiences and ideas of our campus community. We'll be near the fireplace in the Living Room of the Student Center (1st floor) on July 22 at 11:00 a.m.
